Convalescent Plasma Therapy(CPT)

History of Convalescent Plasma Therapy (CPT)?

The concept if this therapy dates back more than a century, when similar treatments were used during Plague, Spanish flu, Diphtheria outbreak and recently in Ebola virus too.

What is CPT?

The idea behind this theory is that immunity can be transferred from a healthy person to a sick person via “Convalescent Plasma”. Convalescent plasma refers to plasma of a recovered COVID-19 patient. In simple words antibodies from a recovered COVID-19 patient are obtained and are provided to a sick person.

How CPT works?

In this therapy, blood from a recovered COVID-19 patient is taken and the serum is separated and screened for virus neutralizing antibodies or antibodies against Corona virus. When any disease causing organism attacks our body and to defend it our body synthesizes antibodies against the pathogen. Basically antibodies are “Immunoglobulin” i.e., antibody is a specialized type of protein which helps the immune system to cope up with the diseases. These antibodies neutralize the attack of the pathogen and can be used to treat sick people by boosting their immunity. The development of immunity against COVID-19 depends upon the severity of the disease i.e., the immunity develops early in asymptomatic cases or mild cases where as it develops later in symptomatic cases or severe cases.
